Personal Injury Compensation Claims for Teflon® Poisoning (Polymer Fume Fever)

Symptoms and Results of Teflon® Poisoning (Polymer Fume Fever)

When being used normally products made with Teflon® are perfectly safe; however, if they are heated above 250 degrees centigrade, the Teflon will start to decompose and harmful fumes can be given off.

Polymer fume fever would normally develop within a few hours of inhaling the fumes and the symptoms are similar to flu. Normally, the symptoms would subside within two or three days; however in extreme cases permanent lung damage can be caused.

If you suspect that you may have been exposed to Teflon® or have contracted polymer fume fever, you should seek medical advice immediately. Simple tests will be able to establish if you have been affected by the fumes at all.

Exposure to Teflon® or Polymer at Work or in the Environment

The most common cases of polymer fume fever have been recorded in workers using electronic instrument boards and those working in plastic and chemical manufacturing plants. The risk of contracting polymer fume fever is also increased if smoking is allowed in an area contaminated with polymer particles. Smoking should be strictly forbidden in these areas and hand-washing before eating or smoking should be advised.

A person may be exposed to polymer fumes whilst at work if they have not been issued with the necessary protective clothing and members of the public could be exposed to it due to a spillage or inadequate safety measures during disposal/incineration.

There are detailed regulations in place which are designed to protect all workers from exposure to chemicals and other substances in the workplace and these are called “The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988” or COSHH for short. If a person believes they have been harmed by an exposure to polymer fumes at work or in the environment, then they may be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim.
