Cheshire Widow awarded £190,000 after husband's death from mesothelioma

A widow from Cheshire was awarded £190,000 compensation with the help of Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors. Her late husband had worked at various power stations throughout the North West of England and been exposed to asbestos dust whilst working close to laggers and other workers disturbing asbestos fibres.

Her thank you letter said "This is a little card to you to say such a big thank you for all the hard dedicated work you have done for me and the family during these years since we lost (husband's name removed at widow's request). It has not just been a friendly informed voice on the telephone but a dedicated person, so easy to talk to."

£175,000 for widow of firefighter

Robin Cambell was exposed to asbestos as a firefighter and went on to develop the fatal asbestos cancer, mesothelioma.

His widow then made a claim for compensation on his behalf for the loss of his income. The insurers involved hoped that Mrs Cambell would settle the claim for less than she deserved; however, she was determined to obtain justice for her husband and proceeded to court with her case. With help from Thompsons, she received £175,000.

Her thank-you letter read "I want to thank you for all your help and guidance during Robin's case and I am very grateful for all you did for me. I'd also like to thank Clare for being with David (her son) and I on April 5th when we came up to London for the Court case. She was very kind and looked after me so well".

Widow receives £85,000 for husband's death from mesothelioma

A widow has recently been awarded £85,000 compensation on behalf of her husband who died after contracting an asbestos related disease.

Mrs Selby's husband contracted asbestosis and the fatal condition, mesothelioma as a result of working with asbestos many years before. Mrs Selby was very happy with the service she received from Thompsons and her thank you letter read:

"Thank you for the cheque of £85,000 which I received in settlement of my late husband's claim for asbestosis mesothelioma. The amount received far exceeded my expectations and gave me the security and peace of mind for the future that my husband would have so wanted me to have. Already, there are several improvements to my property that I will now be able to carry out without worry.

I would like to thank you most sincerely for the work you have done on my behalf to achieve this excellent result. Throughout the claim I have found you and your staff to be extremely understanding and courteous, you have kept me informed every step of the way and have explained matters in a way that I have been able to understand. This has certainly greatly helped me through a difficult time.

I would ask you to please pass on my thanks to all in your office who have been so kind and helpful to me and I wish you all a very happy and successful year ahead."

£80,000 compensation for Boiler Cleaner exposed to asbestos

Mr Doherty first started working as a boiler cleaner in 1966 and was regularly exposed to asbestos at work until the late 1970's or early 1980's.

In 2005 he was diagnosed as suffering from the asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma and made a claim against his former employers. With help from Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors he recovered £80,000 compensation.

The thank you letter from the Doherty family read:

"On behalf of my father and the rest of my family, I would like to express our grateful thanks for the professional and sensitive way my father's case was handled. The speedy and successful outcome was way beyond all our hopes at the beginning and it has certainly helped us all come to terms with the situation my father found himself in. My father has no objection whatsoever for his case to be used for publicity purposes if it will help anybody who finds himself or herself in the same position. Once again many thanks".

Widow receives compensation after her husband died of asbestos cancer mesothelioma

A plumber, who was a member of Amicus, brought proceedings for compensation following exposure to asbestos. He was not provided with protective breathing equipment or warned of the dangers of asbestos dust.

Even though the claim started during his lifetime, Mr Hines died before his case reached court. It was necessary for his widow to take the case to the door of the court in order to receive proper compensation.

An extract from her thank you letter said "I would like to thank Amicus sincerely for their help and support during this difficult period, and for appointing Matthew Tollitt of Thompsons Solicitors (Liverpool) and the barrister who represented me at court. Mr Tollitt worked hard to bring about this result, I am indebted to him, and to my husband’s fellow trade union members for statements made in support of my case."

Mr Jago later went on to develop lung cancer as a result of his exposure to asbestos dust and with help from Thompsons' specialist solicitors he recovered £67,500 compensation. His thank you letter read:

"We cannot praise you enough for all the work you have done on our behalf. Your kind and caring attitude to us was a great comfort. Pleural Plaques Government Compensation Scheme

In the past it was possible for people suffering from pleural plaques to recover compensation; however in October 2007 the House of Lords ruled that compensation would no longer be payable to anyone suffering from the condition

The Government did however, decide to make one-off payments of up to 5,000 to anyone who had been diagnosed with pleural plaques and who had started a claim which was not resolved by the time the House of Lords ended the right to compensation.  This government scheme ends on 31st July 2011.

Thompsons Solicitors recovered compensation from the scheme for many clients who had already started their claims before the ruling was made but who had not recovered any compensation.

Despite the fact that legal costs were not recoverable, we did not charge our clients for our services and received many letters of thanks.  Extracts from some of these are below:

"We would like to thank you for all your efforts in obtaining this payment.  We have had enough worry over asbestos, so we are going to make sure we spend every penny of this award and get as much enjoyment out of it as we can." Mr Green

"Could I please take this opportunity to sincerely thank all staff at Thompsons for the professional help in pursuing my claim.  I greatly appreciate the assistance your staff have provided myself in resolving this matter." Mr Gibson

"Just a note to let you know that the cheque from the Ministry of Justice has been paid into my bank account.  I would like to thank you very much for keeping me informed throughout all the proceedings.  If ever I need any further advice I will be in contact with you.  With my very deepest thanks." Mr Carless

"Just a short note to express my thanks to you for my recent award under the pleural plaques scheme.  I was over the moon to receive it in so short a time."  Mr Rowan

"I would just like to thank you very much for your continued support and dedication in getting compensation for pleural plaques sufferers such as my husband." Mrs Horne

"I would like to tell yourself and your staff how grateful I am at my award of £5000 regarding my claim.  I appreciate that you have to work hard considering the amount of clients you must have.  Can I just say that you have made me very happy.  Thank you so much for your attendance to my claim."  Mr Donoghue

"Many thanks for your excellent service and good wishes.  I received the payment last week and was pleasantly surprised and grateful for the amount.  The money will be a great help to my wife and myself." Mr Sanderson
