Lung Cancer is most commonly associated with smoking cigarettes; however, it can also be caused by inhaling asbestos dust. Statistics tell us that a cigarette smoker is ten times more likely to develop lung cancer than a non-smoking member of the public, a person working with asbestos is five times more likely to develop lung cancer than someone not exposed to asbestos; however a person who works with asbestos and also smokes cigarettes is 50 times more likely to develop lung cancer than the rest of the general public.
It normally takes between 20-40 years or more for lung cancer to develop following an exposure to asbestos and it is not known for certain whether lung cancer can develop alone or whether asbestosis needs to develop first. To make a successful claim for asbestos-induced lung cancer; however, you would need to prove that you were exposed to asbestos by an employer in the past and that asbestos rather than smoking was the cause of your lung cancer. This should be easily proven by medical tests and scans and a personal injury solicitor should be able to carry out the majority of the work for you including tracing your ex-employer.
