Personal Injury Compensation Claims relating to Respiratory Diseases

Types of Respiratory Diseases

There are many different types of respiratory disease including Asthma, Asbestosis, Lung Cancer, Silicosis, Black Lung, Brown Lung, Coal Worker’s Lung and other Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) including emphysema and bronchitis.

Irritants such as dust and fumes can cause these conditions to develop and can also make a pre-existing condition worse. For example, you will probably already be aware that exposure to asbestos dust can cause asbestosis, lung cancer or other asbestos related diseases to develop and exposure to silica can cause silicosis.

Little known dangers include dust from coal, spores and dust from textiles and fumes from welding, smelting, pottery-making and plastics manufacturing. Even spores from grain and wool and mould from hay can cause respiratory diseases as well as bacteria frequently found in hoofed animals. Vapours from chemicals and gases such as formaldehyde, chlorine and ammonia are particularly dangerous. Other harmful fumes can be found in paints, acids, and solvents, cleaning materials, lacquers and pesticides.

Symptoms of Respiratory Disease

After inhaling a dangerous substance, a person may feel some irritation to their mouth and throat before any effect on the lungs. Initial symptoms can include a persistent cough, a fever and cold and flu-like symptoms such as a runny nose as well as wheezing, breathing difficulties, tiredness and tightness of the chest.

In some cases, no symptoms are apparent therefore, if you believe that you have been exposed to a dangerous substance, you should seek medical advice immediately.

Many respiratory diseases are treatable; however, some can prove terminal.
