Congenital Hip Dysplasia is a condition which is present from birth.
Congenital Hip Dysplasia is an abnormality of the hip joint meaning that the top of the thigh bone is not stable in the hip socket. The ligaments in the hip joint are often stretched and loose, although the severity of this does vary.
In some babies, it is obvious that the hips are dislocated at birth or that one leg is longer than the other; however, in others there are no obvious symptoms at all. Congenital Hip Dysplasia can only be diagnosed after a physical examination.
Every new born baby is given a physical examination to check for Congenital Hip Dysplasia and if a diagnosis is made shortly after birth, treatment is easier and safer.
Follow up checks are made by health visitors and sometimes doctors.
If the health visitor or medical practitioner does not detect the Congenital Hip Dysplasia shortly after birth, the problem could go undetected until the child starts to walk and it is noticed that he or she is walking with a limp. By this time, the condition may have caused irrecoverable damage such as decreased agility, problems walking, pain and the risk of developing osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, additional operations may be necessary.
