Tetrachloroethylene (Trike) Poisoning

Symptoms and Results of Trike (TCE) Poisoning

Tetrachloroethylene is also known as TCE, perchloroethylene, PCE, trichloroethylene or trike. It is a powerful solvent and is widely used in the dry-cleaning of fabrics and as a metal degreaser.

Tetrachloroethylene is very harmful if vapours from it are inhaled and it can cause many symptoms ranging from headaches, dizziness and nausea to organ damage, motor problems or even death. It is also dangerous if it comes into contact with the skin and can cause severe skin irritation or dermatitis.

If you suspect that you may have been exposed to trike, you should seek medical advice immediately. Simple tests will be able to establish if you have been affected by the tetrachloroethylene at all.

Exposure to Trike Work or in the Environment

A person may be exposed to trike whilst at work if they have not been issued with the necessary protective clothing and members of the public could be exposed to it due to a spillage or inadequate safety measures during disposal / incineration.

There are detailed regulations in place which are designed to protect all workers from exposure to chemicals and other substances in the workplace and these are called “The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988” or COSHH for short. If a person believes they have been harmed by an exposure to tetrachloroethylene at work or in the environment, then they may be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim.
