What to do if your property has been damaged by rioting?
Claim on your insurance
If you are insured, contact your insurance company immediately. The Association of British Insurers has confirmed that the vast majority of householders and business will be covered for damage and theft caused by rioters by their existing insurance. Many policies contain a clause excluding claims arising from “civil unrest”, but the ABI has confirmed that these clauses should not be used to refuse claims. If you find that your claim is refused, you should follow your insurance company’s complaints procedure. If you are unhappy with the outcome of the complaint, you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service
Claim against the Police Authority under The Riot Damages Act 1886
If you are uninsured or under insured, you can make a claim against your local Police Authority for damage and theft caused by rioters. There is no need to show that the police have been at fault. You should notify the Police Authority of your claim within 14 days. The Prime Minister has announced that this time limit will be extended to 42 days.
Homelessness
Many insurance polices cover the costs of alternative accommodation, if your home is destroyed. If you find that you are not covered for this cost or are not insured, you can seek help from your local authority who are required by law to help certain people whose homes have been destroyed.
