NEWS IN BRIEF

Workers’ statutory holiday entitlement

Workers’ statutory holiday entitlement will be increased by eight days, the Government has announced, bringing it to 28 days in total.

The change will be introduced in two stages. The first stage – when entitlement rises from 20 to 24 days – becomes effective on 1 October 2007. The second – when it increases to 28 days – comes into force on 1 October 2008.

This will bring UK workers’ annual leave more in line with other European countries. For instance, workers in Ireland are entitled to 29 days and in Austria, there is a minimum entitlement of 38 days.
