NEWS IN BRIEF

Responding to findings from the Government consultation last year, ‘Resolving disputes in the workplace’, it is now proposing to develop the practice of a fast-track system for dealing with simple monetary claims.

This will involve five jurisdictions where claims potentially raise straightforward issues and could therefore be decided without the need for a tribunal hearing. The jurisdictions considered suitable are:

• unlawful deductions from wages
• breach of contract
• redundancy pay
• holiday pay
• national minimum wage

Claims falling within these areas but which include other issues will not be eligible for the fast-track system.

Additionally, over 70 per cent of those who responded to the consultation supported the introduction of a new, swift approach to dealing with straightforward claims, where cases could be determined by an employment judge, with the consent of the parties, on the basis of paperwork alone.
