Asbestos compensation secured for shipwright’s family

Asbestos related Cancer, Mesothelioma

The family of a former teacher has received £112,000 in compensation after he died from asbestos related cancer mesothelioma.

The family from Cornwall, who do not wish to be named, received the compensation after instructing asbestos compensation claims specialists Thompsons Solicitors.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. There is no cure for the disease. Sufferers die often within months of diagnosis.

Exposed to asbestos at Dockyards

The 81-year-old was exposed to asbestos while working as an apprentice shipwright for the Ministry of Defence at HM Dockyards in Devonport from 1941 to 1946.

He removed asbestos lagging used on the ships and was exposed to the dangerous material on a daily basis. He was not provided with protective equipment or warned of the dangers of his exposure to the dust.

Following his apprenticeship he joined the Royal Navy, where he served until 1969. Before he retired he was a teacher for 20 years teaching maths, history and music.

His wife said: “It was important to my husband to claim compensation for his illness. He firmly believed that his former employers were responsible for his suffering and ultimately his death from mesothelioma.

“I am pleased that his wishes have been met. Thompsons Solicitors were very sympathetic and understanding in the way they dealt with our claim.”

Mesothelioma is a devastating disease

Eamonn McDonough from Thompsons Solicitors added: “I am delighted that we were able to secure a judgment on behalf of the family and bring the case to a successful conclusion.

“Mesothelioma is a devastating disease and no amount of compensation can ever replace a loved one. However, this settlement helps the family achieve a sense of justice and come to terms with their profound sense of loss.”
