Carter legal aid review is missed opportunity

The Carter Review of legal aid procurement has missed an important opportunity to modernise the procurement of legal aid, specialist criminal defence firm Thompsons has told the Government.

The firm says the review should have focussed on changing the way decisions are taken to pursue major investigations and prosecutions and whether they are in the public interest.

The firm's submission to the Constitutional Affairs Committee says that modernisation proposed by Lord Carter "has identified the wrong targets" and missed the chance to make really significant savings.

It calls on the Government to focus on that small percentage of cases that absorb nearly 50% of the budget, such as the recent Jubilee Line Fraud case which collapsed so spectacularly.

Thompsons also calls for more rigorous assessment of exorbitant cost claims by barristers.
