Compensation for widow of a joiner who died of mesothelioma

Asbestos-Related Cancer

Thompsons Solicitors has won over £200,000 in compensation for the widow of a joiner who died of mesothelioma.

Personal injury claims experts, Thompsons, won the compensation for their client, a woman who does not wish to be named, from Burton on Trent after her husband died from the asbestos-related cancer.

The 60-year-old was diagnosed with mesothelioma in April 2005 and died just a few months later. He developed the disease after he was exposed to asbestos while working as a joiner for Thomas Lowe & Sons from 1961 to 1974.

During his work he cut asbestos boards with a saw for use in houses and also worked along side asbestos insulation contractors in commercial premises.

He was never given any protective equipment or warned about the dangers of asbestos.

Thomas Lowe & Sons admitted negligently exposing the man to the dangerous dust and settled the claim for £224,000.

Terrible Disease

The widow said: “My husband worked hard for his employers for 13 years but as a result developed this terrible disease. He wanted to pursue compensation to ensure I was provided for following his death but also to achieve a sense of justice for his illness.

“He would have liked to have known that we have now received compensation on his behalf.”

Client representative at Thompsons Solicitors, Nicola Harrison, said: “We are pleased to have settled this case on our client’s behalf. Mesothelioma is a devastating disease and no amount of compensation can ever replace the loss of a loved one. However, this settlement achieves some sense of justice for the family.

“It is only right that people who develop mesothelioma are fully and fairly compensated.”
