About Back Injuries
The severity of an injured back can vary tremendously from someone being in pain for only a few weeks to someone being permanently disabled or in pain for life.
The back and spine in particular are very complex structures made up of 24 small bones as well as discs, ligaments, tendons, a spinal cord, nerves and muscles. If any of these components are damaged, back pain can result.
If you have suffered a back injury in an accident which was someone else's fault you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim. To find out if Thompsons Solicitors can help you on a cost-free basis, complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.
Accidents which can result in a Back Injury
Frequent causes of Back Injuries
Back injuries can be caused by many different types of accident. Some of the most common are listed below. Do not hesitate to contact us to discuss the exact circumstances of your accident.
Road Accidents
Lifting or Carrying Heavy Objects
Falling from a Height
Faulty Products
Slips and Trips
Road Accidents are frequently found to cause back injuries, particularly if your vehicle is hit from behind by another vehicle. The pain from this type of whiplash injury can spread up as far as your head, through your neck and all the way down your spine causing lower back pain. If a nerve has been damaged or trapped you may even experience some pain or strange sensations in your arms and legs.
Lifting or Carrying Heavy Objects
Lifting and carrying heavy objects can lead to back injury. In the workplace lifting heavy objects by hand should be avoided wherever possible and if machinery is available to lift the load instead, this should be provided. If lifting and carrying heavy objects can't be avoided, the weights should be monitored to ensure they are within the legal limits and employees should receive training on how to lift and carry heavy objects safely. This should limit the numbers of accidents at work due to manual handling.
Falls from heights frequently result in back injuries, particularly if the person falling lands flat on their feet or on their back.
Falls from height at work should be minimised by strict health and safety procedures such as regular inspections of the workplace including inspections of scaffolding, cranes and safety barriers.
Falls from heights can also result from someone falling from a horse or falling down a lift shaft for example.
Faulty products such as defective chairs, stools or ladders have all been known to cause back injuries if they break or collapse under a person's weight, causing them to fall. If you suffer a back injury from a defective product it would be wise to retain the product together with the purchase receipt if you have it.
Slips and Trips are a common cause of back injuries. Slips and trips can result from spillages, freshly mopped floors and debris lying around or from a defective surface such as uneven paving slabs or a torn carpet.
Sometimes the back injury is caused as a result of the impact when the person falls to the ground and sometimes the injury is caused as the result of a jarring motion when the person trips or tries to regain their balance.
If you have suffered a back injury as a result of an accident which was someone else's fault you may be able to make a personal injury claim for compensation. To find out more about how Thompsons Solicitors could help you on a cost-free basis, call us on 08000 224 224.
Types of Back Injury
Different types of injuries to the back
Your back can be injured in many different ways. Below are some of the most common back injuries we hear about. Please don't hesitate to contact us on 08000 224 224 if you would like to discuss the individual circumstances of your accident.
Slipped Disc
Broken Neck or Broken Back
Soft Tissue Injuries
Although the term 'slipped disc' is commonly used, this type of injury is more accurately described by the terms 'prolapsed disc' or 'herniated disc'. The back pain from this type of injury is caused when the disc bulges or ruptures and the internal material presses on a nerve or the spinal cord.
A fracture in the neck or spine can cause permanent disability or even death, particularly if the spinal cord is damaged. Following a serious fall or back injury a scan should be carried out to check for fractures particularly if there is any loss of feeling or a tingling sensation. A common bone to break in the back is the coccyx which is the bone at the bottom of the spine or 'tail bone'.
The soft tissues of the back include the muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. If any of these soft tissues are damaged or bruised, back pain can result. The injuries will probably not be visible on the outside of the body and may not even be able to be seen on an x-ray or scan but the pain can be very real and can take quite some time to subside. Whiplash is classed as being a soft tissue injury.
If you have suffered a back injury due to someone else's negligence, you may be able to make a personal injury claim for damages. For more information about how Thompsons Solicitors can help you on a cost-free basis complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Treatment of Back Injuries
How a back injury may be treated
There are many different methods of treatment available to people suffering from a back injury.
For more minor back injuries, painkillers, anti inflammatory drugs, exercises or heat pads / cold compresses may be prescribed.
If the pain persists physiotherapy may be recommended if the back injury is thought to be affecting the soft tissues of the body whereas an osteopath or a chiropractor may be recommended if the back injury is thought to be affecting the spinal joints.
For more serious back injuries, surgery may be required by way of a discectomy to remove a damaged disc or fusion surgery to place metal rods into the spine to hold vertebra together which have moved out of place.
If medical treatment or the lack of it is the cause of a back injury we can also deal with claims for compensation against the medical professionals responsible for this as a clinical negligence claim.
