How Refuse Collectors are injured at work

Common Accidents suffered by Refuse Collectors

Some of the most common ways in which refuse collectors are injured at work are detailed below.  If the exact circumstances of your accident are not mentioned, we may still be able to help.  Call us on 08000 224 224 to discuss your injury or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Road Accidents

As part of their job, refuse collectors frequently have to travel around in waste collection lorries or road sweepers.  If you are injured in a road accident whilst driving or whilst as a passenger in a waste collection truck and the accident was not your fault, you may be entitled to compensation.

You could also be hit by a vehicle and injured whilst on foot as a pedestrian, collecting refuse to take back to the vehicle.  Wearing high visibility clothing is advisable for any refuse collectors working early in the morning, particularly in the winter months.

Trips, Slips and Falls

Refuse Collectors spend a lot of their time on public pavements and roads.  They may sometimes also need to access private property and face the risk of slipping, tripping or falling on any defects in the road or path surface such as potholes or raised paving slabs.

Lacerations and Needlesticks

When dealing with waste removal, there is a risk of being exposed to sharp and dangerous objects.  For example broken glass which has not been disposed of correctly or other dangerous sharps such as syringes which instead of being placed in sharps bins have been negligently placed in bin bags or other non-suitable containers.  To read more about injuries caused by syringes or other sharps, visit our Needlestick Injuries Page.

It is essential that refuse collectors are provided with suitable PPE including heavy-duty gloves to protect against lacerations and needlestick injuries.

Manual Handling Injuries

In most areas of the UK, we tend to have wheelie bins now which eliminate some of the risks involved with lifting heavy items; however in areas which don't have this facility or where the bins are filled with heavier than normal items, refuse collectors are still faced with the risk of a manual handling injury.

Training should be provided to all staff involved with lifting or moving heavy objects and you can read more about manual handling injuries on our Manual Handling Compensqation Claim page.

Personal Injury Claims we have dealt with for Refuse Collectors

Real Cases we have dealt with for Refuse Collectors

At Thompsons Solicitors, we have dealt with a wide variety of different injury claims for refuse collectors injured at work.  Just a few examples are shown below.

Fall 10ft into cellar

In this case we obtained compensation for a refuse collector injured at work after falling 10ft down a cellar.  He was completing his rounds when he stepped on what turned out to be a piece of rotten plywood covering the entrance to a cellar.

He injured his back, neck and arm in the accident and had to take time off work.

Trip on raised manhole cover

In another case, we recovered compensation for a refuse worker who tripped on a raised manhole cover while working and suffered an injury.

The street he was working on was a new housing development and the manhole covers in the road were raised by approximately an inch and a half.  The contractors had created small ramps of sand and cement around the covers to rectify the problem but unfortunately, over the course of several months this had begun to crumble away, leaving a lip at the top of one of the covers.  As the refuse collector was pulling some bins along, his heel caught on the lip and he fell, injuring himself.

Ill-fitting PPE

Our client in this case was a refuse collector who was provided with a pair of ill-fitting safety boots to wear by his employer.  The boots injured his feet and he developed a condition called Plantar Fasciitis.

Our expert personal injury solicitors and lawyers recovered compensation for the injured man.
