DePuy Hips
What are DePuy Artificial Joints?
DePuy Artificial Joints are manufactured by DePuy International, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
Implants of this kind are used to replace damaged, diseased or worn joints in the body.
In recent years, there have been two main issues with DePuy implants; the first affecting plastic hip and shoulder joints and the second affecting metal hip joints.
DePuy Metal Hip Implants
From 2003 until 2010, DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System were used on thousands of patients undergoing hip operations.
It was then discovered that the implants were releasing chromium and cobalt metals into the bloodstream of patients fitted with these implants which can cause pain, inflammation and in some cases benign tumours.
Patients who have had these specific implants fitted are now facing early revision surgery to remove and replace the implants which should have lasted between 10 and 20 years.
What to do if you suspect you have a defective implant
It is estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 people have been affected by the most recent problems with the DePuy implants involving the metal hip replacements and hospitals throughout the country are recalling patients who have been fitted with these implants for tests.
If you suspect that you have been fitted with a defective hip replacement joint, you should speak to your GP or specialist at the hospital. They should be able to check your records to find out which brand of implant was used in your case and if necessary will carry out tests such as scans and blood tests to determine if there is a problems with your specific implant.
Injured by a DePuy Artificial Joint?
If you have suffered an injury as a result of having a DePuy artificial joint fitted or if you have needed to undergo a second surgery earlier than expected as a result of a DePuy artificial joint deteriorating, then you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim for compensation.
DePuy are offering to assist with the costs of any tests, treatment and revision surgery; however, you could be entitled to additional compensation on top of this, therefore it is worth seeking guidance from a specialist clinical negligence solicitor..
All personal injury claims are subject to strict time limits; therefore you should seek immediate claim advice. For more information about time-limits contact us or visit our questions answered page.
