Sixteenth cyclist death in London
Collision between cycle and lorry
A former art student and charity volunteer became the sixteenth cyclist to be killed on London’s roads so far this year.
The accident occurred on the 4th December at the junction of Tower Bridge Road and Abbey Street, a recognised accident black spot for cyclists.
Eleanor Carey’s bicycle collided with a lorry leaving her with severe head injuries. Two ambulance crews were called to the scene, but Ms Carey had sadly died by the time they arrived.
Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users
Campaigners are now calling for an improvement in London’s road safety, with a change to the way road design is managed.
Spokesman for the London Cycling Campaign, Mike Cavenett, said: "Tower Bridge Road is a busy road. When you ask people to share space with fast-moving vehicles this is what happens. The question is why are there so many cycling casualties full-stop. Sweden has a zero-fatality policy, this is where London should be heading. The number of deaths is unacceptable."
Henrietta Phillips, a solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors’ Serious Injuries Unit said: “Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and every fatality is one too many. This accident highlights the need for improved road safety in key locations where there are a high number of accidents.”
