"I joined Thompsons in 1991 as a typist at the age of 17 with ten GCSEs and a certificate from a legal secretarial course. I first worked for a Solicitor with a varied personal injury case load. Two years later, I worked for an Equity Partner who encouraged me to consider a career as a Lawyer in personal injury work. With the firm's financial backing and constant support, I completed a law degree at evening classes and obtained a 2:1 grade, which I and my team manager were thrilled with. I have just completed my LPC and was delighted to have passed with distinction and to be named as a Law Society winner, this was a fantastic way to end my studies. As part of my legal training I have carried out employment work and criminal defence work. I qualified as a solicitor in April 2006.
The firm has supported me in every way throughout my academic and practical training.
I simply would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Thompsons.
On a day to day basis, I handle personal injury cases and I have done so for many years now. I specialise in complex asbestos related work.
In my experience, Thompsons recognises hard workers and encourages them to progress. Whilst the firm is a large one - the most experienced personal injury law firm in the UK - I have never felt like I am just a number. They take an interest in individual careers and encourage staff to attend regular training courses and seminars. One of the most reassuring things for me personally, and something that has undoubtedly helped me to get where I am today, is that there is always someone I can ask if I am not sure about something. The supervision Thompsons provides is second to none."

"I joined Thompsons in January 2001 and am based in the Employment Rights Unit at Congress House in London. I specialise in discrimination law though I also conduct general employment law cases. I am the Head of the Employment Rights Unit in London and the South East and a partner in the firm.
Prior to joining Thompsons I was at Brent Community Law Centre for 10 years, practicing mainly Public Law, Housing and Employment Law. Having decided to leave the Law Centre, I was not interested in joining just any private firm. I wanted to focus on Applicant work and be part of an organisation which had an underlying ethos with which I agreed. Thompsons is very much linked with the trade union movement which I empathise with. Working here has proved an ideal mixture of high quality, cutting edge case work coupled with a culture of advancing the rights of Trade Unions and their members.
The Employment Rights Unit is divided into teams and the approach is team based. Further work on cases is often carried out together with individual clients and their Trade Union Officers.
Thompsons provides the right environment for anyone interested in working for the trade union movement and wanting to do more than individual casework."

"When I was looking for a training contract back in 1991, by chance I read about Thompsons' formidable reputation as a personal injury practice. And I was immediately attracted to a firm that had empathy for the Labour and Trade Union Movement. Indeed, it became apparent to me soon after I started that if you want to do Claimant personal injury work for Trade Union clients, there is no better firm.
I arrived at Thompsons with no previous experience in personal injury litigation. But, with excellent supervision, training and instruction, in time I had the opportunity to run high profile, complex cases which received media attention - one of which attracted worldwide coverage.
One of the most striking features at Thompsons is that you are never left on your own; there is a clear 'open door' policy. You are working with some highly proficient and experienced personal injury lawyers, all of whom are prepared to share their knowledge and experience with you. Although there is always plenty to do, no one is "too busy" to help, if and when help is required.
All in all, working at Thompsons gives you the opportunity to be the best in your field in a firm which is committed to client care. And, since we are representing the victims of personal injury, the work is extremely satisfying."
"Thompsons has provided me with excellent training, backed by open and positive input to case progression from experienced, helpful and friendly staff. This has facilitated my personal development and learning in a structured and supportive environment. As a Thompsons employee I have enjoyed varied case work from straightforward RTA to factory accidents to industrial diseases, major injuries and clinical negligence. I've also had the opportunity to undertake court work, advocacy and provide a training service to clients. As a Team Manager I also train and support colleagues.
What's more, Thompsons provides excellent career development opportunities. Mine started in 1986 as a relatively young Secretary. From that position I have been able to progress through in-house training as a paralegal and with Thompsons support to completion of a law degree; LPC; training contract; and admission as a Solicitor in 1996.
Thompsons is a flexible and family friendly firm. Having married and started a family during my time here, I've had the advantage of excellent maternity benefits and the opportunity to return to work part-time. So I'm able to still further my career and balance family needs.
Finally, being part of Thompsons has given me the personal satisfaction of working for a dedicated claimant personal injury practice which is committed to getting the very best results for victims of injury."
