Rebecca's Story

"It quickly became obvious how important it was that Thompsons are very experienced in such claims".  Rebecca’s Mother

“When she was 13 my daughter, Rebecca, went out to a local kebab shop with a friend and didn’t come back.

She had been hit by a passing car and thrown up in the air.

We will probably never know exactly what happened but, we think her head hit the lower part of the windscreen.

But whatever happened she had very severe brain damage, was in intensive care for 7 weeks, was blind and confined to a wheelchair.

The doctors at that time told us Rebecca would never see again.

At first she just lay there and with her eyes open but not moving them.

But my husband, Carl, and I both felt sure she could see and later on that proved to be true.

After the intensive care, she was on wards for 6 more months.

I had done a lot of the care for Rebecca even while she was in hospital so I knew what to expect and how to deal with it when she came home.

We first heard of Thompsons Solicitors through Headway the brain injury charity. They told Rebecca to find Thompsons’ website on the internet.

This led to us having a meeting with Thompsons about pursuing a claim for compensation and it quickly became obvious how important it was that Thompsons are very experienced in such claims.

They were very helpful from the start – explaining what was involved, how long it might take and very thoroughly going into what was needed now and would be needed in the future to provide good care for Rebecca.

Some of the costs we were incurring were already too much for us, even with family help, and Thompsons were terrific at getting us interim payments.

That took the pressure off our everyday living; it made life a lot easier for us as a family.  It did take a long time to reach the final settlement.

But all through that time, Thompsons always kept in touch with us and explained what was going on.

All the experts Thompsons brought in to help us were good people too - they made a big and helpful difference with everything from financial planning to home modifications.

I particularly valued Thompsons care expert - she really knew her subject and was truthful with us.

Rebecca is 22 now and the compensation has made so many different things a lot better for all of us.

We were able to buy a bungalow and have it specially modified for Rebecca’s needs. And she continues to improve. Her memory and speech are getting better.

She has a Physio visit once a week – we never would have got that without the compensation.

She is standing up now, with the Physio, and is determined to walk. She’d love to take our dogs for a walk one day.

She has carers, too, and gets on really well with them.

I looked after her alone for 8 years and thought she might not adapt to any carers but she loves them and has been on holiday with them 3 times now – in a specially modified caravan.

This was a massive step for Rebecca and a huge relief for us, too.

It means we can have a break ourselves now and not have to worry any more.

We know Rebecca’s in safe hands and happy.”
