Slips and Trips at Work

About Slips and Trips in the Workplace

Slips and Trips account for many of the accidents which occur in workplaces throughout the UK each year even though they are one of the simplest types of accidents at work to avoid.

Slips and Trips at work can normally be prevented by common sense actions.  When employers carry out their risk assessments of their premises they should have already identified and eliminated any tripping hazards such as trailing wires or damaged carpets.  They should have also ensured that the building was in a safe state of repair eliminating any risk of leaks from the roof or the plumbing system, oil pipes or tanks. They can provide anti slip mats, anti slip painted surfaces or coatings, handrails and shoes with anti slip soles where the surface remains slippery. Anti slip treads on stairs or steps should be properly maintained. Potholes should be identified and repaired. Adverse weather conditions should be monitored in advance by occupiers and employers and they should have systems in place to organise the application of salt, sand or grit to treat snow ridden, icy or other frozen surfaces or areas under their control.

It is not just an employer's duty to look after health and safety in the workplace though; both employers and employees have a legal responsibility to look after health and safety at work.

As an employee you should look after your own health and safety as well as paying attention to what effects your actions could have on others.  For example if you spill something on the floor you should arrange for it to be cleaned up immediately and have warnings signs placed nearby until the floor is dry.  This should help to avoid anyone suffering from a slip or trip at work which could cause an injury.

If you suffer from a slip or trip at work which was not your fault, you may be able to make a slip or trip at work compensation claim.  For more information contact us on 08000 224 224.

Injured at work after a slip or trip

Injuries caused by slips and trips in the workplace

You may think that slips or trips at work will only result in minor injuries anyway; therefore they are not worth worrying about but in fact slips or trips at work can result in serious injuries such as broken bones, deep lacerations and concussion.

Injuries can be even more serious if the person lands on a hard floor surface or trips into another object such as the corner of a desk or a hard metal machine.  Serious injuries can also be caused if the slip or trip at work is on a staircase.

In very rare cases, brain injuries and fatalities have been caused by slips and trips at work and our specialist personal injury solicitors have experience of dealing with these types of slip or trip at work compensation claims.

Information about Slip and Trip Compensation Claims we have dealt with

Examples of claims we have dealt with for people who have slipped or tripped at work

  • Mr Clayton was involved in two accidents at work and injured his knee on both occasions. In his first accident at work, he slipped after treading on a plastic bottle which had been left on the floor and in his second accident; he tripped over a bolt protruding out from the floor.  He needed surgery on his knee and with help from Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors, he was awarded a total of £18,815 compensation for both slip and trip claims.
  • At the time of his accident Mr Robinson was a Hotel Luggage Porter and he had to lift luggage from a coach into a wooden shed used for luggage storage.  The wooden floor was wet and he slipped injuring his back and hip.  He was awarded £3,500 compensation with help from Thompsons Solicitors' specialist personal injury lawyers and an extract from his thank you letter read "Thank you for the cheque.  I am sorry I didn't get time to reply sooner, we were going away the next day so it made a pleasant start to our holiday.  I would like to thank all the staff involved at Thompsons in achieving a successful ending to my claim.  I know you have all put a lot of effort into this and I wish you every success in the future.  Once again many thanks".
  • Susan Ashworth was leaving her workplace when she slipped on an icy path which had not been gritted in the car park area.  She fractured her wrist and sprained her foot as well as suffering from various bruising and shock.  Thompsons Solicitors helped her make a personal injury compensation claim against her employers and she recovered £5,953 personal injury compensation.  She was very happy with the outcome and an extract from her thank you letter said "I hope you are able to accept this small token of appreciation for all the support and help you have given to me since my accident.  It has been very much appreciated and valued".
  • Ms Piggford worked at a Housing Project and stayed overnight.  The following morning carpet fitters had removed the carpet on the stairs and had not yet laid the new carpet.  There was debris left all over the stairs and the client slipped and fell to the bottom fracturing her ankle.  She appointed Thompsons Solicitors to deal with her personal injury claim and we recovered £4,359 compensation for her.  An extract from her thank you letter read "Just to say a huge thank you for all your hard work toward my settlement.  I felt fully supported throughout, without you I'm sure I wouldn't have felt strong enough to continue with the claim".
  • Mr Strand wrote to thank Thompsons for helping him with his personal injury claim after we recovered 3,500 compensation for him.  Mr Strand was a bus driver and as part of his job had to change a destination blind on the front of his bus which was an old analogue design with a handle to turn which was unfortunately in a very awkward position.  Mr Strand had to stand in the cab and lean right over into the aisle while hanging onto the cab door to steady himself.  Concerns had been raised in the past about this system but his employer had taken no action to change it.  Mr Strand was completing this task when he slipped and fell, injuring his ankle.  An extract from his thank you letter said "The amount of compensation is more than expected and bearing in mind the complicated nature of the accident I thank you for your understanding and patience.  Your perseverance and professionalism with the other side has paid off to my benefit.  I would like to thank you for the work you put in to achieve a very positive result".
  • Mr McMahon was a porter working for the London Borough of Newham at the time of his accident. He was carrying a box down some steps when his foot slipped on a laminated notice that had fallen from the door. He fell and sprained his ankle, damaging the ligaments. He was taken to hospital and needed 8 weeks off work. Thompsons Solicitors helped recover £2,250 compensation for Mr McMahon and his thank you letter said "Please pass on my thanks ... for all the hard work on this case".
  • Mr Sparks wrote to thank Thompsons for the help he received in recovering compensation after an accident at work.  He was walking down a tiled staircase when one of the loose tiles shifted beneath his foot and he lost his balance, twisting his knee.  An extract from his letter read "I found the service offered and given was caring, efficient but to me more important supporting. Giving me time to discuss matters and ask question at meetings, being contactable at any time via phone or / and email with nothing being too small or large to explain either by my Solicitor or her aid. I received constant updates to allow me to know how my case was going and what was going to happen and being done. To sum it up the I do not think I could have been served better."

Claiming for Accidents and Injuries at Work

Slip or Trip at Work Compensation Claims

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer an injury after a slip or trip at work, which was not your fault, you may be able to make a personal injury claim for compensation.

As with all personal injury compensation claims, including claims for slips and trips at work you would need to prove that your injury was caused as a result of the negligence of another party (in this case your employer) and once you appoint a personal injury compensation solicitor, they will assist you in compiling your evidence and presenting it to your employer's liability insurers.  You should if possible get names of witnesses who saw the hazard at the time that caused the slip or trip or better still obtain photographs. Some hazards may be transient such as ice or snow which may melt. You must report the accident to an appropriate authority even if you think initially that you escaped without serious injury.

Every personal injury compensation claim is very different and while some are settled within a matter of months, others can take years. Most cases are settled out of Court; however, some will need to progress this far.
