Introduction to Crane Accident Compensation Claims

Introductory Information about Crane Accidents

Cranes are used every day around the UK and are often crucial in large scale operations where machinery is required to work beyond physical human capabilities. Cranes are mainly used on building sites by the construction industry but can also be used on oil rigs, in the maritime industry, heavy and light engineering and in the mining industry.

Thankfully accidents involving cranes are fairly rare; however, when an accident involving a crane does occur it can cause fatal or very serious injuries.

Over recent years the number of deaths caused by cranes in the UK has averaged out to be approximately one a year.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident with a crane you may be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim.  For more information about how we may be able to help you, complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Most Common Types of Crane Accidents

Causes of Crane Accidents

There are many different causes of crane accidents and the causes of some are unfortunately never known.  Some of the main causes of crane accidents we hear about include:

  • The crane making contact with overhead power lines.
  • Faults or defects with parts of the crane itself.
  • Human errors made whilst assembling, disassembling or rigging the crane.
  • Objects falling from the crane onto people below.
  • Cranes collapsing.
  • Accidents ascending and descending to and from the crane cab.
  • The crane and loads coming into contact with other structures including scaffolding and buildings.
  • Errors and misunderstandings in signalling and crane control movement procedures.

Crane accidents can also be caused or made worse by high winds, the speed at which the crane is moving and the height at which it is being used.

Other common causes of crane accidents involve workers who try and use their hands to steady a suspended load. The load may move unexpectedly and trap the workers hand causing very severe injury. Risk assessments need to be done to assess the movement of the load and the suitability of the procedures and plant and equipment as well as making sure all other persons in the vicinity are safe. Training needs to be given to the crane operators and to the persons responsible for slinging, securing and locating the load. Crane weight bearing capacities should be carefully considered taking into account external factors such as wind and weather, collection of water and saturation of the load, formation of ice and anything else that may effect the security, balance, movement or weight of the load.

The crane equipment has to be regularly inspected and maintained.

Everyone working in the vicinity of a crane should wear the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as hard hats, high visibility jackets and safety boots.

If you or someone you know has been injured by a crane you may be able to make a claim for compensation whether you were the crane operator, a worker on the ground below or a member of the public.  For more information about how Thompsons Solicitors can help you on a cost-free basis contact us on 08000 224 224.

Piece of Metal fell from Crane

Before Mr Smith's accident, he had already complained to his employers that the crane he was using was unsafe. Despite this, his employers took no action and Mr Smith was injured when a piece of metal fell from the crane and cut into his leg.

Mr Smith needed to take three weeks off work and when his wound did heal, it left a scar. Following his accident, the crane was repaired.

Mr Smith's employers accepted full liability for his accident and Thompsons recovered £3,500 compensation for him.

His thank you letter said "Sorry I am late in thanking you for dealing with my case with great success. I am very pleased with the outcome and also with your services. All the best in the future and I thank you again".
