Causes of Bladder Cancer

How is Bladder Cancer caused?

Research into the cause of bladder cancer is still ongoing but two of the main factors known to increase the risk of developing this disease are smoking and exposure to certain chemicals, such as those used in manufacturing dyes, plastics, petroleum and rubber as well as those present in gasworks, leather treating plants, the tyre making industry, the printing industry, chemical manufacturing and processing and distribution industries.

Smoking (including passive smoking or secondhand smoke) increases the risk of developing bladder cancer due to the chemicals in the smoke and smokers are estimated to be four times more likely to develop bladder cancer than non-smokers.  If one smokes but also has exposure to bladder carcinogenic chemicals, the risk of bladder cancer developing is multiplied.

Bladder Cancer is caused by the chemicals travelling into the bloodstream through inhalation of spray or gaseous particulates, ingestion or swallowing or skin splashes or bodily contact.  The kidneys then filter out the chemicals but they then end up in the urine in the bladder.  The carcinogenic chemical then causes an adverse change at the genetic level to cause a tumour to develop.

If you are diagnosed with bladder cancer, caused by exposure to chemicals at work you may be able to make a bladder cancer compensation claim.

Am I at risk of developing bladder cancer?

Occupations most at risk from developing bladder cancer

It can take 25 years or more for bladder cancer to develop after exposure to the harmful chemicals; therefore people who worked with chemicals such as azo dyes, amines, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) or Arylamines such as Aniline dyes, 2-Naphthylamine, 4-Aminobiphenyl, Xenylamine or Benzidine from the 1970's onwards may only be starting to develop symptoms now.

Occupations most as risk from developing bladder cancer are thought to be Machine Setters and Operators, Mechanics, Metal Casters, Miners, Painters and Decorators, leather workers, chemical plant operatives, workers using adhesives in the tyre making industries and people in the printing industry who work with a substance called 'carbon black' that is used to make inks and other dyes or pigments.

If you are diagnosed with bladder cancer after being exposed to chemicals in the workplace you may be able to make a bladder cancer compensation claim.

Symptoms of Bladder Cancer

Signs and Symptoms associated with Bladder Cancer

Symptoms of bladder cancer include:

A burning pain when urinating
Needing to urinate frequently
Traces of blood in the urine

Obviously, having one or more of these symptoms does not mean you have bladder cancer as they are associated with other less-serious conditions such as kidney infections and urinary tract infections (UTI's).

If you suffer from any of the above mentioned symptoms you should visit your GP to have tests carried out.

If you are diagnosed as suffering from bladder cancer which you believe has been caused by exposure to chemicals at work, you may be entitled to make a bladder cancer compensation claim.

Woman helped by Thompsons Solicitors after husband died of Bladder Cancer

Widow made a Bladder Cancer Compensation Claim

Thompsons Solicitors' specialist personal injury lawyers helped Mrs Taylor to make a bladder cancer compensation claim after her husband died of the disease.

Douglas Taylor had worked for a company called Hickson and Welch in Castleford, Leeds for 29 years and had been exposed to aromatic amine fumes on a regular basis.

His exposure to the aromatic amines caused him to develop bladder cancer and he unfortunately died of the illness.

With help from Thompsons Solicitors, Mrs Taylor won bladder cancer compensation on behalf of her deceased husband.  After winning her bladder cancer compensation claim she said "My plea to anyone who worked at Hickson and Welch is to contact their GP and ensure that they are screened, both now and on a regular basis. This cancer can lay dormant – as it did with Dougie – and many of these men are potentially sitting on a timebomb that can end their lives.

"I would like to thank Thompsons Solicitors for their expert guidance and support, David Allan QC, and my psychotherapist Jan Battye who has helped me through this traumatic experience. I also thank my two daughters – they have been a rock for me. I just hope that others don’t have to go through what I have."

If you or someone you know has contracted bladder cancer as a result of exposure to chemicals at work, you may be able to make a bladder cancer compensation claim.
