Personal Injury Compensation Claims relating to Pneumoconiosis

What is Pneumoconiosis?

Pneumoconiosis is the name given to a group of lung diseases including Asbestosis, Silicosis, Welders' Lung (Siderosis of the Lung), Kaolin Pneumoconiosis and Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis.

All of the conditions above are brought on by prolonged exposure to dusty environments. People working in industries such as mining, construction and shipbuilding are particularly at risk.

Types of Pneumoconiosis

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is the most common form of Pneumoconiosis. It is contracted after a person has inhaled asbestos dust over a prolonged period of time. Asbestos was frequently used during the 1960’s and 1970’s in the construction, demolition, mining and shipbuilding industries.

Silicosis

Silicosis can be contracted from inhaling Silica dust over a prolonged period of time. Silica is still present today in sand, sandstone, clay, granite and slate.  People most at risk from this condition are workers in the mining, sandblasting, ceramics and glass industries.

Welders' Lung

Welders' Lung or Siderosis of the Lung is caused by inhaling iron particles. People employed within the metalworking industry are most at risk from this condition.

Kaolin Pneumoconiosis

Kaolin Pneumoconiosis or China Clay Pneumoconiosis as it is sometimes known is caused by the inhalation of kaolin. Kaolin is frequently used within industries such as ceramics, paper, medicines and cosmetics. Kaolin Pneumoconiosis differs from all other types of pneumoconiosis as the sufferer may not experience any breathing difficulties.

Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis

Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis is most frequently found in areas of the United Kingdom where coal was mined, although workers involved with the transportation or use of coal could also be affected. The condition is caused by breathing in particles of coal dust over a prolonged period of time.
